Northern Ireland celebrates more than 21,000 active journeys

Northern Ireland’s Active Travel community celebrated nearly 21,500 active travel journeys last month. It attracted more than 1000 participants across the region, and as a part of the Active Travel competition, they saw more people swap to active modes of transport this June.

The Active Travel Challenge is a joint initiative with Translink, the Department for Infrastructure, the Public Health Agency, Belfast and Western Health Trusts, Belfast City Council, and Derry City and Strabane District Council. The aim was to encourage long-term changes to public transport or active travel such as walking, wheeling, scooting, and cycling.

Their partners commented on the success and the positive impact it would have on the climate and overall fitness. The awards ceremony celebrated the achievements of the organisations involved and included:

  • Most walking journeys – Tony Reid, North Belfast Team
  • Most bus journeys – Malavik Sreejith, Belfast Trust
  • Most cycling journeys – Martin Grimley, NISRA
  • Most train journeys – Peter O’Hare, Translink
