In a move that could support activity and fitness across the country, a new pilot is set to benefit 11 local authorities in the UK. The pilot will bring £12.7 million in multi-year funding for walking groups, cycle training, and free bike loans to be prescribed by GPs.
Active travel is not only a great way to get around, but it can help with a myriad of health issues. From reducing your carbon footprint and giving you an excellent boost in the morning to becoming an important part of supporting muscle recuperation. The trials will be aimed at caring for the UK’s mental and physical health using preventative medicine in the community.
Getting adults healthier and more active is a great way to keep children active too. Whether it’s encouraging walking, cycling, or scooting to school, parents and carers who engage can make this a lifelong habit for children. It can also go a long way to creating cleaner air and less congestion outside schools, as well as helping improve their physical and emotional wellbeing
The local authorities involved that will be running the trial worth £12.7 million in multi-year funding are as follows:
- Bath and North East Somerset
- Bradford
- Cornwall
- Leeds
- Cumbria
- Doncaster
- Gateshead
- Nottingham
- Plymouth
- Suffolk
- Staffordshire
