A cycling group is a great boost to your exercise targets. If you’re looking to motivate your workout, having a group to keep you on track is one of the best ways. But how do you choose one?
Here are our top tips for finding the right group for you…
Decide what you need from your group
What are your goals? You’ve got to consider what you want from your cycling group. Are you casual, or do you want to try competitions? Get faster? Improve your endurance? Or do you want a place to bring your kids or make friends? There are groups that fit one or even several of these targets, so look out for the ones that suit your needs.
And if you’re reading this and you’re not sure about what your goals are. Choose logistics. How long do you have to cycle? What days do you have available? This can help you narrow down your options and find the right group for you.
Check your average cycling speed
When you check for groups, you’ll often find that the average speed will be included. This tells you how fast the group cycles on average, including up and down hills. You can use the stationary cycles in the gym or download a speedometer on your phone to track your average speed. Here’s a list of free apps you can try.
Make sure you’re comfortable with the speed because it will help you keep up your commitment. Too fast or too slow can be off-putting and boring. You don’t want to be left behind, but at the same time, challenging yourself is the best way to make your fitness targets.
Figure out what the group ride guidelines are
Lots of groups have guidelines that you need to be aware of and stick to. You might need to bring a helmet for insurance or be comfortable with a puncture kit. Make sure you know them and ask if you have any problems with them. For the most part, be on time, obey road rules and point out problems when you see them throughout your ride. This will show you’re a team player and help you ingratiate yourself with the group.
Make sure you have the right gear
Check your ABCs. That’s right, air in the tyres, check the brakes and make sure your chain is clean and well-oiled. The best way to stay safe is to have all your bases checked. Have a look at British Cycling’s Let’s Ride group finder to find a group that suits you.
