Cycling Summer

Make this summer a cycling summer with First Step Cycle

First Step Cycle is preparing for a summer of cycling with events for all ages, looking to learn, expand and recover some cycling skills. Cycling is an important skill, whether it’s the first taste of independence or establishing an active start to the day. So, this summer, we will be working with the whole family, offering pre-pedal sessions for toddlers, a Bikeability camp for pre-teens and Rusty Riders for adults.

Pre-pedal for tots

For toddling tots, we have a series of pre-pedal bike sessions running at Children’s Centres throughout the month of August. Designed to give 2–5-year-olds, their first taste of independence and instil in them the mechanics of balance. They are the first pedal-less step to confident bike-riding toddlers!

We have sessions running from 10am to 11am and 1pm to 2pm at:

  • Marfleet Children’s Centre (map)
  • Priory Children’s Centre (map)
  • Little Stars Children’s Centre (map)
  • The Parks Children’s Centre (map)
  • Acorns Children’s Centre (map)

Pre-teen Bikeability Camp

Pre-teens will be learning more advanced skills this summer with Bikeability Camp this August. With Bikeability, knowledge is confidence and safety on the roads to and from school. The camp is available for ages 9- to 13-year-olds at Bikeability Levels 1 and 2. We’ll be holding the sessions at Bottesford and Yaddlesthorpe Village Hall, Bramley Crescent, Scunthorpe, DN16 3PB from the 2nd of August to the 8th of August.

Bikeability Level 1 covers preliminary cycling skills in a safe enclosed environment, with a group of 3 – 15. This level is about getting comfortable using bikes, braking, pedalling, and sharing the road with others. For Level 2, instructors will be getting them comfortable with common local journeys, to the shops or to school for example. The journeys will look at methods of balance while signalling, passing parked cars, and navigating side roads.

Rusty Riding Adults

If you’re feeling apprehensive about getting on your bike again, look no further than Rusty Riders, back for another season. Fully funded, by Hull City Council, the course is geared to getting you comfortable in a mixture of off-road and road settings. It doesn’t matter how long it’s been, it’s all about increasing your comfort levels with basic cycling skills, so you’ll be ready for the daily commute.

We’ll be running sessions at Hull History Centre Car Park on the days below:

  • 7th August 2021 from 9.30am to Midday
  • 21st August 2021 from 9.30am to Midday
